This picture frame moulding is a solid hardwood maple that has been stained mid-tone brown. The profile is 7/8” wide, flat across the front and side, and shows a real grain pattern. This moulding is a great option for folk art, stitchery, and any art that has a feeling of quaintness due to it’s unassuming look. V5015 is made is America.
The style of this moulding can be described as belonging to the American Arts & Crafts movement, or more specifically, relating to the mission style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although most mission-style furniture is associated with oak, this solid maple has a similar look and feel of a stained oak, and shares the mission-style characteristic of being solid hardwood. Historically, this style became fashionable as Americans shifted away from the Victorian era.
Web Picture Frames also uses this profile when producing readymade panel frames, and it’s an economical option for artists getting ready for an upcoming art show. If you are a painter working on 1/8” hardboard, a simple framing option is to float your board on a rigid black backing material that is a total of 1”larger than your art. When you frame the mounted work, the lip of the frame will cover about 1/4” of the backing material, so the black reveal between the art and the frame will be about 1/4”.
