Definition

Water-Based Adhesive refers to any glue or bonding solution that uses water as its primary liquid carrier. Once applied, the water evaporates or is absorbed into the substrate, leaving behind the adhesive solids to form a bond. Common water-based adhesives include PVA glue, acrylic emulsions, wheat paste glue, YES Paste, and traditional hygroscopic hide or animal glues.

Characteristics

  • Low in toxicity and typically easier to clean up than solvent-based adhesives.
  • Available in both reversible (e.g., wheat starch paste) and permanent (e.g., PVA) formulations.
  • Drying time varies based on humidity, thickness, and porosity of materials.
  • May cause paper or fabric expansion due to moisture content if not applied carefully.

Applications

  • Framing and conservation: Used for hinging, mounting, backing, and lamination in archival and non-archival contexts.
  • Bookbinding and restoration: Wheat paste and PVA are commonly used for spine and cover adhesion.
  • Art and craft assembly: Suitable for paper, canvas, porous woods, and textiles.
  • Construction and woodworking: Wood glues and hide glues fall under the water-based adhesive category.

Advantages

  • Non-toxic and generally low VOC (volatile organic compound).
  • Easy cleanup with water while wet.
  • Available in both archival and industrial-strength options.

Limitations

  • May reactivate with humidity if hygroscopic or improperly sealed.
  • Not ideal for non-porous or oily surfaces unless specifically formulated.
  • Some varieties shrink as they dry, potentially warping thin substrates.

Best Practices

  • Apply thin, even coats to prevent buckling of paper-based substrates.
  • Allow full cure time-surface dryness does not always indicate complete bonding.
  • Choose pH-neutral or archival-grade adhesives for conservation work.
  • Store in sealed containers to prevent premature drying or contamination.
