Tru Vue Optium Museum Acrylic combines premium anti-reflective clarity, 99 percent UV blocking, anti-static protection, abrasion resistance and shatter resistance in one lightweight conservation glazing. Trusted by museums around the world, it is designed for valuable artwork and displays where both presentation and preservation matter.

Optium Museum Acrylic provides over 98 percent light transmission while reducing surface reflection to less than 1.5 percent when viewed at 90 degrees. The result is a bright, color-neutral view that allows the artwork to command attention instead of the glazing.

The Highest-Performance Acrylic Glazing We Offer

Regular acrylic provides low weight and break resistance. Conservation acrylic adds stronger UV filtering. Non-glare acrylic diffuses reflections with a textured surface. Optium Museum Acrylic combines conservation protection with true optical anti-reflective performance, anti-static protection and a durable hard coat.

  • Anti-reflective clarity: Double-sided optical coatings reduce reflection to less than 1.5 percent when viewed at 90 degrees.
  • Excellent light transmission: More than 98 percent total light transmission maintains artwork color, contrast and fine detail.
  • 99 percent UV blocking: Helps protect against fading and deterioration caused by ultraviolet light from 300 to 380 nanometers.
  • Anti-static protection: Immediately dissipates static and is suitable for pastels, charcoals, textiles, fragile surfaces and lightweight papers.
  • Abrasion-resistant hard coat: Provides up to 20 times more protection against minor scratches than uncoated acrylic.
  • Shatter resistant: Protects artwork and people without the breakage risks associated with conventional glass.
  • Lightweight: Approximately half the weight of glass, making it suitable for large artwork and structurally sensitive frames.
  • Precision custom cut: Prepared to the exact width and height entered in the frame designer.

Best Uses for Optium Museum Acrylic

Optium Museum Acrylic Compared With Museum Glass

Both Optium Museum Acrylic and Tru Vue Museum Glass provide anti-reflective viewing and 99 percent UV protection. The better material depends on the size, weight, safety requirements and environment of the frame.

  • Weight: Optium is approximately half the weight of glass and is generally preferable for large frames.
  • Break resistance: Optium is shatter resistant, while Museum Glass can break during handling or impact.
  • Static: Optium immediately dissipates static and is appropriate for friable and static-sensitive materials.
  • Scratch resistance: Museum Glass remains naturally resistant to scratching. Optium adds a hard coat that substantially improves scratch resistance over regular acrylic.
  • Handling and shipping: Optium is safer for traveling exhibits, frequently moved artwork and public locations.
  • Smaller traditional frames: Museum Glass may be the more economical premium choice when weight and break resistance are less important.

How to Handle and Clean Optium Museum Acrylic

  • Leave the protective film in place until the frame is ready for assembly.
  • Handle the sheet by its edges and use clean gloves whenever possible.
  • Remove loose particles before wiping the surface.
  • Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth.
  • Tru Vue permits cleaning with common household glass cleaners.
  • Do not use acrylic cleaners or acrylic polishing agents on Optium Museum Acrylic.
  • Avoid scraping the surface or using abrasive pads.

The hard coat provides substantially greater abrasion resistance than ordinary acrylic, but Optium is not scratch proof. Proper handling will preserve its optical coatings and nearly invisible presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Optium Museum Acrylic more expensive?

Optium combines double-sided anti-reflective coatings, 99 percent UV blocking, anti-static performance, an abrasion-resistant hard coat and shatter resistance. No other acrylic option we offer combines all five benefits.

Does Optium completely eliminate reflections?

It virtually eliminates distracting reflections when viewed under normal display conditions. Tru Vue reports reflection below 1.5 percent at a 90-degree viewing angle. Subtle green or blue reflections can become visible at certain off-angle views or under particular lighting conditions.

Does Optium protect artwork from fading?

Optium blocks 99 percent of UV rays from 300 to 380 nanometers, substantially reducing UV-related damage. No glazing can prevent all fading because visible light, display duration and environmental conditions also affect artwork.

Is Optium safe for pastels and charcoal?

Yes. Its anti-static protection immediately dissipates static and is designed for friable materials including charcoal, pastels, fragile surfaces, featherwork and lightweight papers.

Is Optium scratch proof?

No. Its hard coat provides up to 20 times more protection against minor scratches than uncoated acrylic, but careful handling and cleaning are still required.

Can I use ordinary acrylic cleaner?

No. Tru Vue specifically advises against acrylic cleaners and polishing agents. Use a common household glass cleaner with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth.

Is Optium better than Museum Glass?

Optium is generally better for large, frequently moved or safety-sensitive displays because it is lightweight and shatter resistant. It also offers anti-static performance. Museum Glass can be a more economical premium choice for smaller traditional frames.

Can I order Optium Museum Acrylic in a custom size?

Yes. Enter the required sheet width and height in the designer, and WebPictureFrames will custom cut the acrylic to those dimensions.
