Ideal floater frame for art 1 1/2" thick or less. This contemporary black floater frame features smooth clean lines. The outside depth of this L-shaped profile is 2”, and the width of the face is 5/16”.
The popularity of the floater frame style has developed over the years as a postmodern aesthetic for items not requiring a front lip to contain the contents. An example of items that don’t require a front lip would be canvas paintings and giclee prints on canvas, which are stretched and stapled over a stretcher bar.
Additional items that may be floated with this black floater frame include paintings on hardboard panels, plywood, or laminated foamcore or gatorboard. A growing trend in watercolor painting is to wax the surface to eliminate the need for glass or acrylic glazing. Collage, mixed media, and three-dimensional relief paintings are also good matches for a floater frame, so long as the art doesn’t require top layers such as glass or mats to protect the item.
From a technical standpoint, any thickness of art up to 1 ½” thick should work with this floater frame. If you specify that your art is 1/8” thick on our Art Securing tab, for example, we will provide 1 3/8” blocks to raise the surface of the art so it’s just slightly back from the plain of the floater frame face. If your art is 1” thick, we will provide ½” blocks. If your art is ¾” thick, we would provide ¾” blocks, and so on.
