Each mat is cut to the outside dimensions and opening size selected when ordering. The outside dimensions should fit the picture frame, while the opening is generally made slightly smaller than the artwork so its edges remain covered and supported. Check the intended visible image area carefully when important details are close to an edge.

Single and Layered Mat Designs

A black core mat can be used alone when the exposed dark bevel provides enough definition. It can also be included in a layered design when additional color, depth, or spacing is desired. Because the bevel already creates a distinct line around the artwork, restrained layering often produces the most balanced result.
