How Floater Frame Sizing Works

A floater frame is ordered from the artwork size, not from the finished outside dimensions of the frame. Measure the artwork carefully, then use three checks to choose a compatible profile.

1. Enter Exact Width and Height

Enter the artwork's exact edge-to-edge width and height. The same frame can be used in portrait or landscape orientation when the dimensions are reversed.

2. Confirm Complete Depth

Measure the artwork's complete depth and compare it with the maximum supported depth shown for the individual floater-frame product.

3. Choose the Reveal Separately

Select the visible gap you want on each side. A 1/4-inch reveal means a 1/4-inch gap at the left, right, top, and bottom.

Do not add the reveal to the artwork size. Enter the exact artwork width and height. The designer uses your separately selected reveal to calculate the required frame opening.

Canvas and Panel Compatibility

Canvas and panel labels describe common uses rather than exclusive frame categories. Many canvas floater frames can hold compatible art panels, while shallow panel profiles can hold compatible thin canvas artwork.

A size match alone does not guarantee compatibility. Also consider the artwork's complete depth, desired position inside the frame, selected reveal, weight, construction, and safe mounting method.

Custom Sizes Backed by Framing Experience

The popular dimensions above are starting points, not limits. WebPictureFrames.com builds custom floater frames for exact artwork widths and heights within each product's available size range.

Our family-owned custom frame shop has more than 40 years of framing experience. If the artwork has an unusual depth, construction, weight, or mounting requirement, contact our framing specialists before ordering.

Floater Frame Size Questions

What size floater frame should I order?

Choose the page that matches the exact width and height of your artwork. On the product page, enter the artwork dimensions themselves and select the Floater Reveal separately.

Should I add the reveal to my canvas dimensions?

No. Do not add the reveal to the artwork width or height. Enter the exact artwork dimensions, then choose the Floater Reveal independently. The designer calculates the required frame opening.

What does a 1/4-inch Floater Reveal mean?

A 1/4-inch Floater Reveal creates a visible 1/4-inch gap at each side of the artwork: left, right, top, and bottom.

Can I order a floater frame size that is not listed here?

Yes. The size pages highlight popular dimensions, but WebPictureFrames.com also builds floater frames to custom artwork widths and heights within each product's available size range.

Does artwork depth affect which floater frame fits?

Yes. Measure the complete artwork depth and compare it with the maximum supported depth shown for the individual frame. Width and height alone do not determine compatibility.

Can the same floater frame size hold canvas or an art panel?

Often, yes. Canvas and panel labels describe common applications rather than absolute restrictions. Compatibility depends on the artwork dimensions, complete depth, desired position, reveal, and safe mounting method.
