Double Mat
Definition
A Double Mat is a matting technique featuring two layered mats. The top mat covers most of the second mat, leaving a visible border or reveal of the bottom mat to create depth, contrast, and visual separation between the artwork and the frame.
Features
- Top mat covers the majority of the secondary mat.
- The secondary mat is partially exposed, called the mat reveal.
- Enhances depth, color contrast, and overall presentation of artwork or photographs.
- Often used with conservation-grade mat board for long-term protection.
Applications
- Highlighting important elements in fine art, photography, or prints.
- Adding sophistication to framed certificates, diplomas, or awards.
- Creating contrast and emphasis with color or texture differences between layers.
Best Practices
- Choose complementary or contrasting colors to enhance visual impact.
- Use acid-free, lignin-free mat boards for preservation.
- Maintain consistent spacing for the mat reveal to ensure balanced aesthetics.
- Consider UV-protective glazing if the artwork will be displayed in light-exposed areas.
