Edge Coverage
Definition
Edge Coverage is a matting technique in picture framing where the mat's window opening slightly overlaps the edges of the artwork, usually by about 1/8 inch. This overlap helps keep the artwork securely in place within the frame and ensures clean, consistent presentation.
Function
- Secures artwork to prevent shifting or slipping inside the frame.
- Creates a clean border that visually frames the artwork.
- Helps protect the edges of the artwork from damage during handling or display.
Best Practices
- Use minimal overlap (typically 1/8") to avoid covering important parts of the artwork.
- Ensure the artwork is flat and properly aligned before applying edge coverage.
- Combine with archival hinges or mounting techniques for optimal preservation.
