Putty

Putty is a malleable, paste-like material used to fill imperfections, seams, and minor gaps in wood surfaces. In picture framing, putty is commonly applied to cover nail holes, mitered seams, scratches, or other surface irregularities in finished frames. It can be sanded, stained, or painted over to achieve a smooth, uniform finish.

Applications in Framing

  • Nail Hole and Seam Filling: Conceals holes left by brads, finish nails, or joinery imperfections.
  • Surface Refinement: Smooths out minor dents, scratches, or gaps in wood mouldings prior to staining or coating.
  • Pre-Finishing Preparation: Ensures a flawless surface for subsequent finishes, including clear coat, French polish, or varnish.

Types of Putty

  • Oil-Based Putty: Slow-drying, ideal for wood that will be stained; adheres well to wood surfaces.
  • Water-Based Putty: Fast-drying and easy to clean up; suitable for painted finishes.
  • Wax or Color-Matched Putty: Often used for touch-ups on stained or finished frames for seamless repair.

Application Tips

  • Use a putty knife or flexible spatula for smooth, even application.
  • Allow sufficient drying time before sanding or finishing.
  • Test color-matched putty on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it blends with the surrounding finish.
