Regular Foam Core
Regular Foam Core is a lightweight, rigid board consisting of a foam center sandwiched between two paper or clay-coated surfaces. It provides structural support for artwork, signage, and displays, but unlike archival-grade boards, it is not acid-free and is therefore not suitable for long-term preservation of valuable artwork.
Characteristics
- Rigid yet lightweight, making it easy to handle and cut.
- Buffered with kaolin clay for smooth surface finishes.
- Not acid-free, so prolonged contact with artwork may cause deterioration or discoloration over time.
- Available in various thicknesses to accommodate framing or mounting needs.
Applications
- Temporary mounting for presentations, signage, or displays.
- Matting and backing for casual framing projects.
- Prototyping or mock-ups in design and framing work.
Advantages
- Cost-effective and widely available.
- Easy to cut with standard utility knives or mat cutters.
- Provides sufficient support for most non-archival framing needs.
Considerations
- Not recommended for archival or museum-quality framing due to acid content.
- May warp or discolor over time when exposed to moisture or sunlight.
- Should not be used in direct contact with original artworks, photographs, or documents intended for long-term preservation.
