Release Boards
Release Boards are removable overlay sheets designed to resist adhesion during mounting, laminating, or other conservation and framing processes. They serve as a protective barrier between adhesives or coatings and the artwork or substrate, ensuring that surfaces remain undamaged and clean.
Applications
- Used when mounting artwork, photographs, or prints to prevent unintended contact with adhesives.
- Commonly employed in lamination processes to protect the top surface of paper, mat board, or other substrates.
- Can be used as a protective layer when working with wet adhesives such as Wheat Paste or PVA Glue.
- Often cut to custom sizes to fit the dimensions of artwork or mounting boards, including MDF or Cork Board.
Materials
- Typically made from paper or plastic sheets treated with a non-stick coating such as silicone.
- Variants include Release Paper and Silicone Paper, which provide superior anti-adhesion properties.
- Durable enough to be reused in multiple mounting or laminating sessions.
Best Practices
- Ensure the release board is free from dust or debris before use to prevent marks or impressions on the artwork.
- Use appropriate-sized boards to fully cover the work area.
- Remove the release board carefully after adhesives or laminates have set to avoid smearing or lifting the artwork.
