Substrate

Definition

Substrate refers to the support material or base layer onto which mediums, films, coatings, or finishes are applied. In picture framing, fine art, and printing, the substrate serves as the foundation for artwork, prints, or coatings, and its characteristics greatly influence the stability, durability, and appearance of the finished piece.

Types of Substrates

  • Paper: Common for prints, drawings, and photographs.
  • Canvas: Fabric material stretched over Stretcher Bars for painting.
  • Wood Panels: Used for painting, gilding, or mounting.
  • Acrylic Sheets: Lightweight, rigid surfaces often used in contemporary art.
  • Metal: Such as aluminum, commonly used in dye sublimation printing.
  • Foam Core and Mount Boards: Used for mounting and supporting prints in frames.

Considerations

  • The substrate must be chosen based on the intended medium (paint, print, adhesive, etc.).
  • Archival or acid-free substrates are critical for long-term preservation.
  • The surface quality (smooth, textured, porous, non-porous) affects how materials bond to it.

Uses in Framing

  • As the mounting surface for prints, photos, or posters.
  • As a durable base for resin coatings, laminations, or protective finishes.
  • As the structural support in shadow boxes or Floater Frames.
