Adhesive Transfer Tape

Adhesive Transfer Tape

Definition: See ATG Tape.

Overview

Adhesive transfer tape is a double-sided tape without a carrier, meaning the adhesive itself is transferred onto the surface during application. It is commonly applied using an ATG gun, which dispenses the adhesive in a clean, controlled line. This makes it a standard tool in framing workshops for attaching mats, mounting lightweight artwork, and assembling frame components.

Applications in Picture Framing

Framers use adhesive transfer tape for precision mounting where minimal thickness is needed and where traditional glue would be messy or too permanent. Because the tape is pressure-sensitive, it allows for quick, reliable adhesion on matboard, mounting board, or fillet inlays. It is also sometimes used in preservation framing-though with caution-since many varieties are not designed to be archival.

Conservation Considerations

Standard adhesive transfer tape is generally not acid-free or archival, making it unsuitable for direct contact with valuable or conservation-level artwork. When archival quality is required, alternative adhesives, such as acrylic-based adhesives designed for conservation, may be considered. Framers should be mindful of long-term stability and use transfer tape only in non-critical areas.
