Preservation Framing

Preservation Framing refers to the practice of framing artwork, photographs, or documents in a manner that ensures their long-term protection, stability, and conservation. This type of framing emphasizes archival-quality materials and techniques to minimize deterioration, damage, and exposure to environmental risks.

Overview

Preservation framing is sometimes referred to as Conservation Framing. It prioritizes materials and methods that are reversible, acid-free, and safe for long-term storage and display. Unlike decorative framing, preservation framing focuses on the longevity and integrity of the artwork rather than purely aesthetic considerations.

Materials Used

  • Acid-Free Mats: Prevents acid migration and yellowing of artwork over time.
  • Cotton Rag or museum-quality backing boards: Provides stable, lignin-free support for paper-based artworks.
  • Acrylic Sheet or UV-filtering glazing: Protects against UV light and physical damage while minimizing reflections.
  • Archival Hinges or Tapes: Used to attach artwork securely while remaining reversible.
  • Sealed micro-environments: Optional use of molecular traps or buffering materials to neutralize airborne pollutants and acids.

Techniques

  • Non-invasive or reversible mounting to prevent permanent alterations or damage.
  • Layered matting and protective glazing to buffer artwork from environmental fluctuations, such as humidity, temperature, and light.
  • Use of spacers to prevent direct contact between the artwork and glazing.
  • Ensuring proper frame assembly to avoid warping, stress, or misalignment.

Benefits

  • Protects artwork from fading, discoloration, and acid migration.
  • Maintains structural integrity over time.
  • Allows for long-term display or storage without compromising the value or condition of the artwork.
  • Can accommodate a wide range of art media, including paper, photographs, canvas, and textiles.
