Cardboard

Definition

Cardboard is a stiff board made primarily from wood pulp fiber, often manufactured in corrugated form for strength and durability. In the framing industry, cardboard is most commonly used as a packaging material to protect picture frames during shipment in soft or hybrid packs, rather than as a conservation-grade material for the artwork itself.

Construction & Composition

  • Corrugated Cardboard: Features a fluted inner layer sandwiched between two flat liners, offering cushioning and rigidity.
  • Chipboard: A non-corrugated, thinner version made from compressed recycled paper pulp, often used as a backing layer in packaging.
  • Wood Pulp Base: The primary raw material is mechanically processed pulp from trees, making cardboard widely available and inexpensive.

Uses in Framing

  • Packaging: Cardboard sheets and boxes protect frames in transit by absorbing shock and resisting puncture.
  • Hybrid Pack Systems: Often combined with bubble wrap, foam sheeting, or corner protectors for additional security.
  • Separation Layers: Flat cardboard sheets may be placed between multiple frames in bulk shipments to prevent scratches.

Limitations

  • Non-Archival: Cardboard contains lignin and acidic components that can damage artwork if used inside the frame package.
  • Moisture Sensitivity: Easily warps or weakens when exposed to humidity or water.
  • Short-Term Use: Suitable for shipping and handling but not recommended for permanent storage or conservation.

Best Practices

  • Use cardboard exclusively for external packaging or temporary support, not for direct contact with valuable artwork.
  • For long-term backing or mounting, substitute with archival options like Mounting Board or Foam Board.
  • When shipping, reinforce corners and edges with additional protective materials.
  • Recycle or reuse cardboard packaging whenever possible for sustainable practice.

Alternatives

  • Coroplast - Lightweight corrugated plastic offering moisture resistance.
  • Mounting Board - Archival, acid-free board for mounting artwork.
  • Foam Board - Rigid, lightweight alternative for mounting or backing.
  • PVC Sheet - Durable plastic board with smooth surfaces for display and signage.
