Filler Board
Definition
Filler Board is a board placed behind the artwork and mat inside a frame to fill extra space, provide structural support, and help secure framing components. Common materials include foam board, cardboard, or acid-free backing board.
Applications
- Prevent artwork from shifting within the frame.
- Provide uniform support for framed pieces of varying depth.
- Used in combination with spacers or risers for shadow box effects.
Best Practices
- Use acid-free or archival-quality materials to prevent deterioration of artwork.
- Cut filler boards to fit snugly without compressing the artwork.
- Layer multiple thin boards instead of a single thick board when fine adjustment is needed.
