Sink Mount
Overview
Sink Mount is a technique used to position and secure thicker artworks, such as board-mounted prints or paintings, within a recessed cavity created in a foam core or similar substrate. The recessed "sink" allows the artwork to sit flush or slightly below the surface of a mat window, creating a clean and professional presentation while stabilizing the artwork.
Applications
- Ideal for artworks that are thicker than standard paper, such as panels, mounted prints, or mixed-media pieces.
- Used in non-invasive mounting setups where adhesives should be minimized or avoided.
- Compatible with foam core, Sintra, or other rigid substrates that can be recessed accurately.
- Helps maintain consistent reveal and alignment under mats for a polished appearance.
Best Practices
- Cut the recessed cavity slightly smaller than the artwork to hold it securely without shifting.
- Ensure the depth of the sink is appropriate for the thickness of the art, preventing it from protruding above the mat.
- Use archival materials for the sink base to prevent acid damage over time.
- Check the alignment and fit before final installation to avoid warping or uneven edges.
