Flexible Tabs
Definition
Flexible Tabs are thin metal or plastic fasteners used in picture framing to secure the stacked contents of a frame-such as the artwork, mat board, glazing, and backing board-inside the frame rabbet. Unlike rigid tabs, flexible tabs are designed to bend up and down, allowing the frame contents to be removed and reinstalled multiple times without damaging the frame structure.
Features
- Reusable due to their bendable design.
- Available in manual and machine-inserted versions.
- Commonly made from spring steel or flexible plastic.
- Installed with a point gun or tab driver for efficiency.
Uses
- Ideal for frames where frequent art changes are anticipated, such as gallery or retail displays.
- Provides secure retention while still allowing reversible access.
- Prevents wear and tear that might occur with repeated nail or rigid point insertion.
Best Practices
- Use flexible tabs in frames that require accessibility, and rigid tabs for permanent installations.
- Space tabs evenly along all four frame edges to prevent bowing or gaps.
- Check flexibility periodically, as overuse can cause fatigue and breakage.
