Neutralize

Definition: Neutralize refers to the process of adjusting the pH level of art materials-such as paper, mat board, or backing-to make them neither acidic nor alkaline. This is a critical step in conservation and archival framing to prevent long-term degradation of artwork.

Overview

Acidic materials can cause yellowing, brittleness, and deterioration of artwork over time. Neutralization typically involves using alkaline substances to counteract acidity, ensuring that materials are safe for long-term preservation.

Methods of Neutralization

  • Buffering: Incorporating alkaline compounds such as calcium carbonate into paper or mat board to maintain a neutral pH.
  • Deacidification Sprays: Applying a chemical solution to neutralize acids in paper or textiles.
  • Alkaline Washing: Immersing materials in a controlled alkaline solution to remove acidity (used cautiously in conservation).

Applications

  • Archival matting and framing of artworks and photographs.
  • Conservation of historical documents, manuscripts, and prints.
  • Preparation of storage materials for long-term preservation.
