Offset Clips

Offset Clips

Definition: Offset Clips are small metal brackets designed to secure artwork, mats, glazing, or backing within a frame when the materials and frame rabbet depth are not the same thickness. They are bent at a 90° angle (or slightly offset) to bridge the gap between the artwork package and the frame, ensuring a snug and stable fit.

Overview

Offset clips function as a simple but effective solution for framing projects where the depth of the artwork exceeds or falls short of the rabbet. By "offsetting" the point of contact, these clips hold frame contents tightly in place without applying uneven pressure. They are widely used in both commercial and custom framing for their durability, versatility, and ease of use.

Applications

  • Securing stretched canvas into frames with shallow rabbets.
  • Holding thick glazing or multiple mats within deeper mouldings.
  • Adapting frames for odd-sized or unusually thick packages.
  • Used in shadowboxes or textile art framing, where package depth varies.

Design & Sizes

  • Manufactured in a variety of depths, usually ranging from 1/8" to 3/4" or more.
  • Made of galvanized steel or plated metal for durability.
  • Attached with screws into the back of the frame moulding.
  • Reusable and adjustable depending on framing needs.

Best Practices

  • Select the correct clip depth to avoid over-compression of artwork.
  • Use felt bumpers or protective barriers if clips contact delicate surfaces.
  • Ensure screws are installed without splitting wooden mouldings.
  • Check periodically for loosening in larger or heavier frame assemblies.

Comparison with Similar Hardware

  • Fletcher Points: Driven into wood to hold flat materials in place, unlike offset clips which use screws and are removable.
  • Turnbuttons: Rotate into position to secure backing boards, but are less effective with depth differences.
  • Offsets vs. Offset Clips: Terminology may overlap, but offset clips usually describe removable brackets installed with screws, while offsets may also refer to simple bent tabs or integrated hardware.
