Fitting
Definition
Fitting refers to the process of installing artwork, prints, or documents into a picture frame, ensuring that all components-such as glazing, matting, backing boards, and decorative inserts-are properly aligned, secure, and ready for display. This step also prepares the frame for hanging or tabletop presentation, including the installation of hardware if necessary.
Applications
- Inserting artwork into custom or stock frames for exhibitions, sales, or personal display.
- Ensuring mats, fillets, and embellishments are correctly aligned with the artwork.
- Installing protective glazing (glass or acrylic) to prevent damage from dust, UV light, or handling.
- Securing backing boards and fasteners (e.g., clips, flexible tabs) to maintain the artwork's position within the frame.
- Preparing frames with hanging hardware or easel supports for proper presentation.
Best Practices
- Always handle artwork with clean hands or cotton gloves to prevent smudges or damage.
- Check that the artwork fits precisely within the mat window and does not bow or warp.
- Use appropriate fasteners-such as flexible tabs or offset clips-without over-tightening to avoid damaging artwork or frame components.
- Install bumpers or felt pads on the frame back to protect walls and ensure level hanging.
- Verify that the frame is square and the artwork is centered before final sealing.
