UPS Shipping Formula

Definition

The UPS Shipping Formula is a dimensional calculation used by UPS to classify packages for shipping cost and eligibility. The formula is expressed as: 2 x Width + Height + 2 x Thickness (or 2W + H + 2T). The result determines whether a package is considered Regular, Oversized, or Beyond Oversize according to UPS guidelines.

Purpose

  • To establish shipping tiers based on overall package dimensions.
  • To determine whether special handling or surcharges apply.
  • To help framers and shippers predict freight cost and packing requirements.

Example Calculation

For a package measuring 24" (W) x 30" (H) x 4" (T):

2 x 24 + 30 + 2 x 4 = 48 + 30 + 8 = 86 inches (overall size)

An 86" total may still qualify as regular shipping, but larger totals may incur oversize or freight surcharges.

Usage in Framing and Art Shipping

  • Commonly applied when shipping framed artwork, especially large frames or canvases.
  • Essential for determining whether to ship via parcel or LTL freight.
  • Used when selecting between Soft Pack, Hybrid Pack, or full crate-style packaging.
