Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP)

Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP)

Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) is a specialized form of polypropylene plastic that has been stretched in both the machine direction and the transverse direction during production. This biaxial orientation process improves the material's strength, clarity, and barrier properties, making it highly valued in packaging, conservation, and display applications. In the framing and art industries, BOPP is particularly known for its use in crystal-clear sleeves that protect artwork, prints, and photographs while allowing for flawless visibility.

Key Properties

  • Ultra-Clear Transparency: BOPP offers exceptional clarity, ensuring artwork and prints can be displayed without distortion.
  • Durability: The biaxial orientation process enhances tear resistance, stiffness, and tensile strength compared to standard polypropylene.
  • Moisture Resistance: Provides a barrier against humidity and airborne contaminants, protecting sensitive art materials.
  • Lightweight: Despite its durability, BOPP remains lightweight and flexible.
  • Non-Yellowing: Unlike some plastics, BOPP does not degrade or discolor quickly, maintaining long-term clarity.

Applications in the Art and Framing Industry

  • Display Sleeves: Widely used in archival-quality presentation sleeves for prints, photographs, and documents.
  • Protective Packaging: Commonly used for shrink-wraps and bagging art supplies to prevent damage during shipping and storage.
  • Retail Presentation: Crystal-clear bags made from BOPP allow artworks and prints to be displayed on gridwall or slatboard systems while remaining protected.
  • Conservation Use: Although not fully archival like Mylar, BOPP is often accepted for short- to medium-term art protection due to its stability and clarity.

Advantages Over Standard Polypropylene (PP)

While standard polypropylene (PP) is cost-effective and versatile, BOPP offers superior optical clarity and tensile strength. Its biaxial orientation makes it less prone to warping or tearing, especially in thin film form. For display and presentation purposes where visibility and strength are critical, BOPP is preferred over untreated PP.

Considerations

  • BOPP is not as heat-resistant as polyester films (such as Mylar) and may deform under high heat conditions.
  • It is recyclable but not biodegradable, so sustainability considerations may influence its usage in eco-conscious settings.
  • Long-term archival projects may favor more inert plastics, though BOPP remains an excellent option for general display and retail use.
