Core

Definition

The Core refers to the center layers of a multi-layered sheet good, such as matboard, foam board, or composite panels. The core plays a key role in determining thickness, rigidity, weight, and archival quality.

Context

In picture framing, the core of a matboard is especially important since it is exposed at the beveled edge of a window cut. Cores may be white, cream, or colored, and may be buffered or unbuffered depending on archival requirements. In structural substrates like Alupoly or foam board, the core material affects durability and weight.

Best Practices

  • Choose ply thickness appropriate for the artwork and framing package.
  • For preservation framing, use cores that are acid-free, lignin-free, and buffered when possible.
  • Be aware of visual appearance at the cut edge of mats, since core color influences presentation.
