How Wide Should Picture Mat Borders Be?

How much mat border do you need to have around your image? There are standards and personal preference but there is no right or wrong amount. We don't allow mat borders less than 3/4" on our site. Mats are really used for one or two different reasons (they enhance your art and they keep your art from coming in contact with the glass). There are many times that people put very skinny mats on their art and then after they see it framed they are a bit sad because the mat just does not accentuate their art as good as it could have with a larger mat. The other style that some people like is to have really large mat borders. This can make a very dramatic impact.
