Definition

A Canvas Wrap is a canvas stretching method in which the printed imagery extends beyond the front surface of the canvas and is wrapped around the sidewalls of the stretcher bar. This technique allows the artwork to be displayed without a traditional frame, creating a clean, modern, frameless presentation.

Construction & Method

• Printing: The image is printed with extra margin area so it can continue around the stretcher bar edges.
• Wrapping: The canvas is carefully pulled and folded around the sides of the stretcher bar for tight, even tension.
• Securing: The back of the stretcher bar is fastened with a staple gun or heavy-duty stapler to hold the wrap in place.
• Finishing: Corners are folded neatly, and backing paper or bumpers may be added for wall protection.

• Frameless Design: Provides a contemporary look without requiring an external frame.
• Edge Continuation: Imagery flows around the sides, enhancing depth and presentation.
• Versatility: Can be hung directly on the wall or paired with floater frames for added effect.

Types of Canvas Wraps

• Gallery Wrap: Image continues seamlessly around all four edges of the stretcher bars.
• Mirror Wrap: The outer edges of the image are digitally mirrored to extend around the stretcher sides, preventing loss of important visual elements.
• Solid Color Wrap: The sides are filled with a neutral or chosen color instead of extending the image.

Best Practices

• Ensure adequate bleed (usually 2-3 inches) is added to the artwork file for wrapping purposes.
• Select heavy-duty stretcher bars to prevent warping on larger canvases.
• Use archival-quality inks and primed canvas for long-term display.
