Pine: A widely available species of softwood that is commonly used in picture frame moulding, construction, and furniture. In framing, pine is valued for its affordability, workability, and light weight, making it easy to cut, join, and finish. It has a pale yellow to light brown coloration with visible grain patterns that can accept stain, paint, or veneer. While versatile, pine is softer and less durable than hardwoods, making it more prone to dents, scratches, and warping over time. For long-term stability in picture framing, pine is typically used for readymade frames and decorative mouldings rather than high-end or conservation-grade framing. Knot-free pine is preferred when a smooth, consistent finish is desired.
