Deep Floater Frames for Canvas
Deep floater frames provide the additional rabbet depth needed to accommodate thicker stretched canvases. Rabbet depth, also called artwork depth, is the maximum canvas thickness a frame can accept. The canvas sits inside the frame with its face unobstructed, while a visible reveal creates the floating appearance.
Order using the exact height and width of your stretched canvas, then measure its thickness at several points. Compare the greatest measurement with the rabbet depth listed for the individual frame, since capacity varies from one profile to another. What Makes a Floater Frame Deep?
A deep floater frame has greater rabbet depth, allowing it to accommodate a thicker stretched canvas. Rabbet depth is also commonly called artwork depth. It describes the maximum canvas thickness the frame can accept.
Depth and reveal perform different jobs. The frame depth determines whether the canvas will fit. The reveal is the visible gap between the canvas and frame that creates the floating appearance.
When to Choose a Deep Floater Frame
Choose a deep floater when the thickness of your stretched canvas exceeds the capacity of a standard floater frame. If both standard and deep profiles can accommodate the canvas, you can choose between them based on the side profile and proportions you prefer.

How to Measure for the Correct Depth
- Measure the canvas height and width. Order the frame using this art size, not the finished outside dimensions of the frame.
- Measure the canvas thickness at several points. Stretcher bars and canvas construction can cause the measurement to vary.
- Check the corners and back. Include folded canvas, staples, backing material and other buildup when determining the greatest thickness.
- Compare the greatest measurement with the listed rabbet depth. Each frame can have a different artwork-depth capacity.

Do not rely only on the nominal depth of the stretcher bars. Folded canvas, staples and corner buildup can make the finished canvas thicker than expected. Measure several locations and use the greatest measurement when checking frame capacity.
What You Will See
A canvas floater frame leaves the front of the artwork unobstructed. The sides of the canvas and an even reveal remain visible. The reveal creates the shadow gap; the deeper frame profile provides the capacity needed for a thicker canvas.
