What is a floater frame (and why it works for canvas)?
A floater frame surrounds the canvas while leaving a visible gap-often called the reveal-so the artwork appears to "float" inside the frame. Unlike traditional frames that overlap the front edge, a floater frame is designed to keep the artwork face fully visible while adding a crisp, finished border.

The 3 measurements that determine fit
Floater frames for canvas depend on three measurements. Get these right before choosing a profile or placing an order.
- Width: measure the outside edge, left to right (not the image area).
- Height: measure the outside edge, top to bottom (not the image area).
- Depth: measure the side thickness, including stretcher bars or cradle depth.
Best practice: measure in more than one spot. If the canvas or panel is slightly out of square, use the largest accurate width and height. If the variation is significant, contact a framing specialist before ordering.
Ordering size: enter artwork size only (don't add reveal)
Order by the exact outside width and height of your finished canvas or panel. Do not add extra space for the reveal-the floater frame is designed with the proper allowance built in.

Choose the right profile by artwork depth
Depth fit is required, and profiles vary. Confirm your artwork depth first, then select a floater profile that supports it.
- Standard stretched canvas: many are approximately 3/4 to 1 inch deep.
- Gallery-depth canvas: deeper stretcher bars require a deeper floater profile.
- Cradled panels and wood panels: depth varies widely-measure carefully.
- Canvas boards / thin panels: may require a different mounting approach than screws.
Canvas vs. rigid panels: compatibility and mounting notes
These wood floater frames are designed for stretched canvas and can also work for rigid artwork (such as cradled panels or wood panels) when the depth and mounting method are appropriate.
- Stretched canvas mounting: commonly attaches from the back with screws into stretcher bars. Match screw length to the stretcher bar depth to avoid blow-through.
- Thin panels: screws may be too long or may pass through; an adhesive mounting method may be needed depending on the panel material and the value of the artwork.
